OBSESSION cover

Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Book summary:

This is a stand alone novel that is an adult spin-off
of theLux Series.

He’s arrogant, domineering, and… To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something… unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life… or is it Hunter?

Tamie and I have a shared obsession with a particular author that we both love. Her name is Jennifer L. Armentrout. His name is Daemon Black. We adore him. The book series is Lux. And yes it’s about aliens. Do. Not. Laugh. Well, maybe a little laughing is allowed. We are so not alone is this obsession. Go check out the other insane readers and worshippers of her work on Goodreads and her website. Seriously, if the world were coming to an end because of an alien invasion of Luxen, I would not care. In fact, I might just dance a little. LOL

I think I just lost my train of thought there. Right, Obsession by JLA. Arum, number one enemy of Luxen. Pretty much the only species that can take one down. Here’s the thing about this book. There are always two sides to every story. If you have read the other 4 books, you know what Arum are and what they are capable of. They are supposed to be the bad guys. This new book, a spinoff of sorts, is about Hunter, an arum, who is hired by the Department of Defense, to protect Serena Cross. She saw her best friend die by the hands of an alien. Her life is now in danger, because she knows that aliens exist, specifically Luxen and Arum. Not in her best interest to fall for the bad guy. But wait… Is Hunter the bad guy?

Man, oh man. This is so not your YA book. It definitely falls in the New Adult/Erotic genre. Hunter is rough around the edges, and so very sexy. He is also rude, arrogant, has a foul mouth, and is a hired hitman, so he kills people, alien and human, for a living, and really likes doing that. Serena doesn’t take well to his attitude, but can’t ignore his attractiveness.

Excerpt from Chapter 7:

Never in my life had I been more frustrated. Go figure it wouldn’t be with a human but a freaking alien. At least I now know that the male species were asses no matter what planet they hailed from.

****

Even with all of the crazy stuff happening recently, beneath the sorrow and the anger, I was still a red-blooded, twenty-three year old woman sitting in front of a man, who may not be a hundred-percent human but had to have caused a panty-dropping crisis across the universe. Maybe not a personality to brag about, but he oozed that kind of dark sex appeal that made good girls do bad, bad things. Over and over again.

Dear God, she’s got it bad. Hunter also has twin brothers named Sin and Lore. Yes. There is more than one. *happy dance* Not that he gets along with both of them.

I should also clarify that you don’t have to read the Lux series to read this book. It is, right now, a stand alone book. Though we do see some characters in this story from the other books, namely Daemon and Luc. Luc is definitely a character that I want to know more about, because right now no one can figure if he’s human or alien. He just seems to know all of the answers, and doesn’t show loyalty to one side or the other. Intriguing…

Excerpt from Chapter 23:

Some people that I’m paranoid, but I like to say I’m realistically prepared for when the shit hits the fan.” – Luc

I will warn you that if you read this book, you will want to read the other books. (It’s literary crack, I tell you) This book paints the Luxen in a bad light, which was surprising to me. It seems that both species want to live on the earth with humans for different reasons. Hunter decides working for DOD isn’t for him anymore, but maybe Serena is.

Serena is to be able to give Hunter a different perspective on life. She wants to live peacefully with Hunter, but not until she finds out who exactly killed her best friend. The problem is Hunter never cared about anyone else besides himself before. So why does he feel compelled to help her?

Excerpt from Chapter 24:

“You feel perfect,” Hunter grunted, slamming up and wringing a strangled moan from me. “You are perfect for me, only me.”

Those words sent me over the edge, tumbling into a release that shattered every part of my being.

I for one, hope that we will see more of Hunter and Serena in the last two books of the Lux series. They have mad chemistry together, and maybe they will be able to help Daemon and Katy. When it comes to fighting alien races, we will just have to see where the chips fall.

Another warning. Try not to drink while reading JLA’s books on your e-reader. She writes both intense and funny characters, so you might just do some damage if you are not careful. Just saying…

My girl, JLA. I heart her. :)

My girl, JLA. I heart her. :)

I give this crazy, sexy book 5 freaking stars! I put it on my “books that own me” and “top shelf fantastic reads” shelf on Goodreads, but am thinking that I might create a shelf specifically for JLA books. They really are a treat all by themselves.
